The Sermon on the Mount Explained: Matthew 5

Image
Matthew 5 opens with Jesus sitting down on a hillside in Galilee, the posture of a teacher with authority, and saying things that still unsettle people two thousand years later. This isn't a chapter to skim for a devotional feeling and move on. It rewards slow reading, the kind where you notice what a word meant in Aramaic, what a valley outside Jerusalem was actually used for, and what a first-century audience would have flinched at. Let's read it the way it was heard: one line at a time. Quick answer Matthew 5 is the opening of Jesus's longest recorded teaching, given to His disciples and a crowd on a Galilean hillside. It begins by redefining blessedness around spiritual poverty, grief, humility, and hunger for righteousness rather than wealth or comfort (the Beatitudes, 5:3-12). Psalm 27: The Lord Is My Light and Salvation

Image
Psalm 27 is quoted often and read carefully less often, which is a shame, because the middle of it is harder than the opening line. David moves from bold declaration to raw pleading in the space of a few verses, and if you read closely you'll notice he never tells us the siege lifted. Sit with the whole thing, not just verse 1. Quick answer Psalm 27 is David's psalm of confidence written under real threat, not after the threat had passed. It opens with a bold declaration that God's presence removes the ultimate cause for fear, then moves into a plea for one thing above all: nearness to God's presence. Halfway through, the tone shifts sharply into pleading, "do not hide your face from me", showing that confidence in God and desperate need are not contradictions but companions. It ends with a command to wait, repeated twice, because waiting is the hardest and most honest posture faith can take when the danger is still present. The Lord is my light and my salva...
