Bible Verses About Hospitality and Welcoming Others

Image
Some of you reading this are worn out by how much your home already holds, other people's needs, other people's mess, and hospitality feels like one more thing you're failing at. Others of you are on the receiving end this week, new to a church, new to a country, wondering if anyone will notice you standing at the edge of the room. These verses were written for both. Scripture treats welcome as costly and ordinary at the same time, which is closer to how most of us actually live it out. How to read a page like this Don't read this the way you'd scroll a newsfeed. Take one group at a time, out loud if you can, and let the notes sit before moving on. Ask which group names something true about your week right now: the guest you've been avoiding, the welcome you're still waiting for, the exhaustion of hosting when you have nothing left. Then take one verse and pray it back to God in your own words, before you jump to what you should do about it. If a verse stea...

Bible Verses About Loving Your Neighbor

Image
Loving your neighbor sounds simple until you try it with a particular person in mind, the one who wronged you, the one who never says thank you, the one whose habits make your blood pressure rise. Jesus was asked to define 'neighbor' and answered with a story that widened the word further than anyone wanted it to go. Read one group, then stop. Notice which verse you resisted a little, that resistance is often where something is actually being asked of you. Say one verse out loud, then pray it back, swapping 'neighbor' for the real name of the person you're struggling with this week. If a verse describe...

Image
What did Jesus really mean by the Parable of the Good Samaritan? Short answer. Jesus was asked to define who counts as a neighbor. He refused to answer that question and asked a different one instead: who acted like a neighbor? The lawyer wanted a boundary he could stay inside of. Jesus gave him a Samaritan, a man from a people Jews despised, stopping for a stranger on a dangerous road, while two religious professionals walked past. The parable isn't primarily about being nice to strangers. It's about whether you'll let need, rather than category, decide who you'll become to someone. Jesus ends not with a definition but a command: "Go and do likewise" (Luke 10:37, NIV). The question behind the question The parable doesn't start as a story about kindness. It starts as a legal debate. A lawyer, testing Jesus, asks what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus turns it back on him: what does the law say? The man answers well, love God fully, love your nei...
