How to Find Peace at Night When Your Mind Won't Stop

Image
In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. - Psalm 4:8 It's probably late if you're reading this. Maybe the house is quiet and your head is anything but. You've prayed already, maybe more than once, and the thoughts just keep circling back like they didn't hear you. I want to talk about what Psalm 4:8 actually offers here, because it's more specific, and more useful, than it sounds at first. It's because he placed his trust somewhere outside his own ability to control the night. For most of us, racing thoughts at night aren't really about the dark. They're abou...

Bible characters who struggled with depression

Which Bible characters struggled with depression, and what does Scripture show us through them? Short answer. Several major figures in Scripture show what we would now recognise as depression: Elijah collapsed and asked to die after his greatest victory (1 Kings 19), Job cursed the day he was born (Job 3), David wrote psalms of being cast down and even unanswered darkness (Psalm 42, Psalm 88), and Jonah begged God to take his life (Jonah 4). Scripture does not treat this as a footnote or an embarrassment. It records their words in full, often without a tidy resolution in the same chapter. God meets each of them with patience, not rebuke, and often with very practical care before any theological conversation happens at all.
