Psalm 139: God Knows Me Fully—What It Really Means

Have you ever felt truly known by another person? Not just your surface story, but your deepest thoughts, your secret struggles, and your unspoken longings? There's a profound comfort in being fully understood. This is exactly what Psalm 139 reveals about God's relationship with you—and it changes everything.
"O LORD, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar." — Psalm 139:1-2 (ESV)
God's Knowledge Is Complete and Intimate
When the psalmist writes, "O LORD, you have searched me and known me" (Psalm 139:1, ESV), he invites us into a stunning reality: God doesn't just know about you. He knows you with an intimacy that far surpasses any human relationship. The Hebrew word "searched" suggests a thorough, careful examination—as if God has investigated every corner of your being.
This isn't distant observation. God knows your sitting down and your rising up. He knows your thoughts before you speak them. In verse 2, the psalmist continues: "You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar" (Psalm 139:2, ESV). This means nothing about you surprises Him. He is never caught off guard by your doubts, your failures, or your questions.
There Is Nowhere You Can Hide From His Presence
One of the most liberating truths in Scripture comes next. The psalmist asks, "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?" (Psalm 139:7, NIV). Rather than offering a place of escape, the answer is transformative: there isn't one. You cannot outrun God, not because He's chasing you in anger, but because His presence is the safest place you can be.
The psalmist explores this: "If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast" (Psalm 139:8-10, NIV). Whether in success or failure, in joy or sorrow, in confidence or confusion—God is present with you. His knowledge of you means His care for you is inescapable.
You Are Fearfully and Wonderfully Made
Perhaps the most famous verse from this psalm is verse 14: "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well" (Psalm 139:14, NIV). This declaration isn't about vanity. It's a statement of sacred worth.
When God knows you completely—your personality, your struggles, your unique design—He declares you good. He made you with intention. Every quality that makes you distinctly you was woven into your being by a loving Creator. The parts of yourself you might criticize or hide? God sees their purpose. Your sensitivity might seem like weakness until you recognize it as the source of your compassion. Your intense thinking might feel isolating until you realize it deepens your spirituality. God's complete knowledge of you includes knowledge of your potential.
His Knowledge Invites Honest Connection
Because God knows you fully, you don't need to perform or pretend. In verse 23, the psalmist invites us into radical honesty: "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts" (Psalm 139:23, NIV). This isn't a prayer of someone hiding. It's the prayer of someone who has already surrendered to the truth that concealment is impossible—and has decided to embrace it.
This transforms prayer from a duty into an act of intimacy. You can pray with brutal honesty because God already knows what you're thinking anyway. He knows your anger at Him, your doubts about His goodness, your secret desires, and your hidden shames. And He invites you to name these things in His presence, not to condemn you, but to heal you.
Living in the Freedom of Being Fully Known
Understanding that God knows you fully doesn't lead to shame—it leads to freedom. When you stop trying to hide, you stop wasting energy on performance. When you accept that God knows your every thought and still loves you, you begin to believe you are worthy of love exactly as you are.
This knowledge changes how you see yourself, how you relate to others, and how you move through the world. You can take risks because you're already known. You can be vulnerable because God has already searched your heart and chosen to love you. You can be authentically you because the One whose opinion matters most already knows who you are.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank You for knowing me completely—not just the parts I'm proud of, but all of me. Help me stop hiding and start living in the freedom of being fully known and loved by You. Give me courage to be authentically myself, and wisdom to extend the same grace to others that You so generously give to me. Amen.
