For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 What is eternal life, and how do I receive it? Short answer. Eternal life is not simply endless existence. Jesus defines it in John 17:3 as knowing God the Father and Jesus Christ whom he sent, a relationship, not just a duration. You receive it by believing in Jesus, trusting that his death and resurrection deal with your sin and open the way to God. John 3:16 puts it plainly: whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. It is not earned through good behaviour or religious effort. It is a gift. And it starts now. Ephesians 2:8-9 might be the most quoted, least sat-with verse in the New Testament. People tape it to mirrors and rightly so, but two verses lifted out of a paragraph can lose the thing that makes them true. Paul wrote it right after describing exactly what we were saved from, and right before describing what we were saved for. Read it in its place, and it stops being a slogan and starts being good news for a specific kind of person: someone who knows they can't fix themselves. Quick answer Ephesians 2:8-9 says salvation is God's gift, received through faith, and that no part of it can be earned or boasted about. Paul has just spent three verses describing humanity as 'dead in trespasses and sins' (Ephesians 2:1), not sick, not struggling, dead. Dead people don't contribute to their own resurrection.
